Conditions of the Contest

1. The contest of film projects dedicated to the bicentennial of the birth of Taras Shevchenko accepts story treatments: original works which were not earlier published, filmed, performed, or otherwise publicized, with the rights on these works not having been earlier transferred to other physical or legal persons. The date of the beginning of the Contest is the date of its first public announcement.
2. According to the Principles, the Contest consists of two parts:
2.1. The first stage is the contest of script summaries (treatments). For participation in it, a literary text must be submitted which recounts the story that the future script will narrate, presents the characters, depicts the environment in which they act and the general tone of the narrative. This stage of the contest is anonymous: script treatments will be submitted pseudonymously.
The script treatments must be submitted in printed form on white size A4 paper, based on a word processing document, and adhere to the following standards:
Recommended font: Courier New 12 or Times New Roman 12.
Title: centered and in boldface Subtitle (optional): underneath the title, centered
Tense: always present.
Dialogues: absent, with the exception of instances where key phrases by the characters are needed to clarify their worldview.
Style: concise, bright, emotional.
Size: from 4 to 12 pages.
The title page must contain only the pseudonym of the author (be this an individual or a group), the title of the text, and the number of pages. All pages must be numbered.
The script treatments should be mailed to the Contest’s postal address:

The envelope, signed by the same pseudonym as the title page, must contain the following: an unstapled copy of the treatment, as well as a sealed envelope, also signed by the same pseudonym, which should contain a free-form letter of application to take part in the contest.
The letter of application must include the following information:
• actual first, middle, and last name of the author(s), same as in the passport or in the birth certificate;
• home address;
• contact phone number;
• electronic mail address (if available);
• title of the text;
• pseudonym chosen for participating in the Contest.
The envelope containing the information should be sent with delivery confirmation to ensure that it reaches the jury. Courier mail services are recommended. The deadline for submitting entries for the Contest, postmarked on the envelopes: 1 November 2011 from within Ukraine; 20 October 2011 from outside Ukraine.
2.1.1 The organizer of the Contest invites to take part in the jury of the first stage 5 (five) persons with professional expertise in the area of cinema: scriptwriters, directors, film critics; these persons will not have the right to be a participant in the Contest and in the eventual production of the film. The names of the members of the jury will not be publicized until the completion of the first stage of the Contest.
2.1.2 The ceremony announcing the winners of the first stage of the Contest will take place on 22 November 2011 in Kyiv, in the building of the State Enterprise «Ukrainian House Center for Business and Cultural Cooperation» (the time of the start of the ceremony to be announced separately).
2.1.3 The Organizer of the Contest retains the right to offer each of the three winners of the first stage a contract on property rights for the future film script. Copyright will be retained by the author (individual or group). The author (individual or group) of the script treatment recognized as the winner of the first stage will have an opportunity to contact the Contest Organizer requesting assistance in forming a creative team for the film project in preparation for the second stage. The Contest Organizer provides consultative assistance in this case.
2.2 The second stage: public defense (pitching) of scripts and film projects which gained this right as a result of the first stage of the Contest. Scripts based on the basis of the treatments are to be submitted to the Contest Organizer in 12 copies for preliminary familiarization of the jury members with them by 1 February 2012.
For the preparation of expressive, effective, and dynamic defense of the projects, as specified in the Contest Principles, the author (individual or group) shall receive financial assistance. Public defense (pitching) of the scripts and projects is to take place on 21 February 2012 (location and time to be announced separately).
The creative team, besides the author of the script (individual or group) should present the producer, director, cinematographer, and art director of the future film. Among other persons who could be introduced are the composer, costume designer, and the proposed cast members for the principal roles. The highest possible degree of presentation of the future film is desired: its essential content, stylistic and genre features, principles of producing and organization of filming process. Pitching must involve the use of printed illustrative albums (in 7 copies), as well as the use of multimedia presentational content. Technical means for organizing such presentations will be provided by the Contest Organizer. The time limit of the public defense of the script and the film project is 30 minutes.
2.2.1 The broader composition of the jury for the second stage, as decided by the Contest Organizer, includes representatives of the film industry and of the Contest Organizer. Representatives of the State Film Agency of Ukraine and the National Filmmakers Union of Ukraine have the status of observers. After the completion of the defense of scripts and film projects, the jury by way of consensus determines the procedure of their discussion.
2.2.2 The ceremony announcing the results of the Contest is to take place on 9 March 2012 (location and time to be announced separately).
